Friendswood is Texas's only permanent Quaker-founded settlement, established in 1895, and that history is part of what gives the city its character — widely described as friendly, family-oriented, and low-crime, with a built-out, slow-growth footprint that's stayed fairly consistent over the years. Neighborhoods range from the newer West Ranch, a 766-acre master-planned community with a resort-style pool, two lakes, and more than 100 acres of trails, to older, established areas like Falcon Ridge and Wilderness Trails dating back to the 1980s. Stevenson Park and Centennial Park round out the city's green space, with sports fields, an amphitheater, and a splash pad.

Friendswood's holiday calendar centers on Santa in the Park at Stevenson Park, typically held in mid-December with fireworks, a market, and a parade around the city's large Christmas tree, plus a same-day Christmas Lighted Parade organized by the Chamber of Commerce that runs along FM 518 into Stevenson Park. The city also puts up a Lighted Holiday Trail at Stevenson Park that runs from Thanksgiving through the end of the year.
